How Dubbing Kills Foreign Language Learning

After coming back from my one-month Swedish exchange teaching, I decided to write an article on the importance of not dubbing certain programs on TV. I would have liked to highlight the difference between dubbing and subtitling since from my viewpoint and according to my experience dubbing does not do any good even if you want to learn for example English, not to mention the beauty of acquiring the language, which has great advantages compared with learning. Subtitling movies, cartoons, shows, and even commercials instead of dubbing them can help a lot to acquire a language. In this article, I also represented a European study where one can realize that 60% of Hungarians do not speak any foreign languages. It was published in “Köznevelés”, the official weekly of the Hungarian Ministry of Education in Hungarian: Köves, Cs. (2010) ‘Az idegen nyelv (nem)tudásról…’, Köznevelés, 18 June, pp.27-28.
